Waging Total War on Islam (by Stephen Lendman) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - When asked why he robbed banks, Willie Sutton said that's where the money is. Washington targets the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia because it's where most proved oil and gas reserves are. Waging war require enemies. Pretexts create them. Muslims are demonized as threats. They're portrayed as culturally inferior, dirty, lecherous, untrustworthy, religiously fanatical, and violent. Slanderous media commentaries suggest gun-totting terrorists threatening US interests...

Panetta, Barak to Announce More US Military Aid to Israel
'Special Package' of $680 Million to Be Announced in DC
(Jason Ditz) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is headed to Washington DC on Monday, with plans for him and his US counterpart Leon Panetta to officially announce $680 million in additional US military aid to Israel. The Pentagon initially cooked up this most recent plan to increase aid to Israel, pushing for the House Armed Services Committee to authorize the funding for the "Iron Dome" missile defense program in late March. The committee quickly did so....

Resisting US belligerence (By: Jalees Hazir) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - The United States decided to go all out, gunning for a non-compliant Pakistan last week. The drone attacks in the North Waziristan Agency were supplemented by the ballistic missile launched by Hillary Clinton from India claiming that the new al-Qaeda Chief, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, was hiding in Pakistan. All the assorted tactics of badgering a demonised ally honed over time, including the holding back of assistance and threatening direct action against militants on Pakistani soil, were employed simultaneously with a renewed vigour. While the superpower mounts pressure on the government to resume Nato supplies and use the Pakistan armed forces as an unquestioning implementation agency for the US gameplan in Afghanistan, it would not hear of ending the criminal drone strikes or tendering an apology for killing Pakistani soldiers at Salala. Is our government capable of warding off this concerted attack? ...

Israel arrests 800,000 Palestinians since 1948 (Petra) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 -Israel has arrested and imprisoned around 800,000 Palestinians since 1948 including children, according to Palestinian Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs Abdul Nasser Farwaneh. He added in a statistical report released today that the Israeli occupation forces adopted the policy of arrest on a daily basis to humiliate Palestinians, noting that Israel used some of them as human shields and executed many of them. Director of Palestinian Statistics Department said the period between 1948-1967 was the worst for Palestinian and Arab prisoners as there were random arrests and collective detention...

Nakba Law in action: Students must pay expenses for ceremony (Noam Sheizaf) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - A little over a year ago, the Israeli Knesset passed the Nakba Law, stating that institutions who receive state funding are not to permit any commemoration of the Palestinian catastrophe in 1948. During Israel’s War of Independence, 80 percent of the Arab population in what later became the State of Israel was displaced. Some of the Palestinians fled battle grounds, others were forcefully removed. None were allowed back, and their property was confiscated by the State of Israel. Palestinians mark their national catastrophe on May 15, the day following Israel’s declaration of independence. A couple of years ago, the Knesset passed a bill aimed at limiting the discussion and commemoration of the Nakba entirely....

Israel's Buffoon: The UN Nakba (By Vacy Vlazna) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - ... Israel's impunity to commit war crimes, crimes against humanity, its 64 year defiance of UN resolutions amplify the UN's lethal incompetence. 187 member nations, (not including Israel's quislings and human rights hypocrites; USA, UK, Australia, Germany, France), are too gutless or subservient or self-serving to protect and enforce the international laws for which they are legally obligated. International human rights law lays down obligations which States are bound to respect. By becoming parties to international treaties, States assume obligations and duties under international law to respect, to protect and to fulfil human rights. The obligation to respect means that States must refrain from interfering with or curtailing the enjoyment of human rights. The obligation to protect requires States to protect individuals and groups against human rights abuses. The obligation to fulfil means that States must take positive action to facilitate the enjoyment of basic human rights. The 64 years of the uninterrupted Palestinian Nakba with its sweeping scale of tragic suffering challenges the UN's moral and political credibility and its very existence as Israel's buffoon...

US drones spy on Americans - ‘incidentally’ (RussiaToday) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - A leaked US Air Force document stipulates a drone that happens to capture surveillance images of Americans may store them for a period of 90 days. The paper appears to justify spying on citizens, as long as it is "incidental." The document accepts that the Air Force may not record information non-consensually; however it does state "collected imagery may incidentally include US persons or private property without consent." The report, dated April 23 was discovered by Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists and has been put online. Data that is accidentally recorded may be stored for a period of 90 days by the Pentagon while it is analyzed to see if the subjects are legitimate targets for state surveillance. The Pentagon may also disseminate this data among other government organizations if it sees fit...

Youth organisation release statement regarding Hunger Strike & PLO (The following is a statement released by youth organisation Palestinians for Dignity) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - Local and international news agencies informed us last night, 12 May, that the Palestinian political establishment met with the representative of the Israeli apartheid regime, Isaac Molkho, in Ramallah to deliver the latter's response to a previous letter that was sent by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) on 17 April. This visit coincides with the ongoing open-ended hunger strike waged by Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli prisons for 27 consecutive days, in a crucial and strategic battle in which the role of the prisoners' movement in the Palestinian national struggle is restored. This movement is raising fair demands to guarantee the treatment of political prisoners and detainees according to international humanitarian law, especially the Third and Fourth Geneva Conventions...

"I have never lived a settled life": Church of the Nativity deportees mark 10 years of exile (Shahd Abusalama) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - Yesterday 39 Palestinians from Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank marked ten years of deportation from their precious homes. That day eleven years ago, they were expelled from Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity after a siege by the Israeli occupation forces that lasted for 39 days; 26 men went to Gaza, 13 to Europe. Since that tragedy, which marked another form of ethnic cleansing, this day has been called "Deported Palestinians’ Day." Since the prisoner exchange in October, hundreds of Palestinians have joined this category, as 203 ex-detainees were convicted to indefinite deportation. Moreover, ex-detainee Hana al-Shalabi was recently forcibly transferred from Jenin in the West Bank to Gaza after hunger striking for 45 days to protest her midnight arrest on February 16 by a huge, aggressive force of Israeli soldiers, and subsequent detention without charge or trial under administrative detention....

Israeli minister: Cut power supply to Gaza this summer (Noam Sheizaf) - 14-may-2012

May 13, 2012 - Israel’s minister of environmental protection, Gilad Erdan (Likud), has demanded that the government stop supplying power to the Gaza Strip in order to prevent power failure in Israeli cities this summer. In an official letter addressed to all government ministers (below), Erdan notes that 4.5 percent of Israel’s power supply is sold to Gaza. Erdan writes (emphasis in the original): The State of Israel is preparing itself for a power shortage during the summer of 2012. In order to continue the steady supply of power, we [the government] are presented with a decision which details measures for the prevention of a power shortage. Before the government discusses this option, I ask you to add a condition which states that prior to placing any limit on the power supply to Israeli citizens, power supply to all foreign elements will stop, most notably to the terror authority of Hamas in Gaza. The collapse of the natural gas agreement between Egypt and Israel will probably lead to a power shortage in Israel – a temporary problem, which can be solved when Israel begins using its own huge natural gas resources in 2013. As a result, Israelis are likely to suffer a few hours of power shortage at the peak of this summer’s heat. The 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza already suffer 12 hours of blackout a day on average...

Honoring a ‘Terror War’ Architect (By Ray McGovern) - 13-may-2012

May 12, 2012 - Since even readers of the New York Times are aware of deputy national security adviser John Brennan’s open identification with torture, secret prisons and other abuses of national and international law, Fordham University’s invitation to him to give the commencement address on May 19 brought, well, shock and awe to many Fordham students, faculty and alumni. It now turns out we didn’t know the half of it. Piling outrage upon indignity, Fordham announced this week that Brennan will enjoy pride of place among the "eight notables" on whom it will confer honorary degrees at commencement. The others receiving a Doctorate in Humane Letters, honoris causa, include Timothy Cardinal Dolan (Archbishop of New York), and Brooklyn congressman Edolphus Towns...

Video - Nakba Day: Return to Palestine (neverbeforecampaign) - 13-may-2012

May 12, 2012 - On the 15th of May of every year, Palestinians and the whole world remember how it all started. How the Israelis' ethnic cleansing of a people and the destruction of a society - the Nakba - was met with global indifference. Many factors made it so, but among them was a Zionist propaganda machine that illustrated the crime committed in Palestine in 1948 as a war of independence against aggressive Arabs and Palestinians...

Palestine’s hunger strikers have created a Ghandian moment (Richard Falk) - 13-may-2012

May 12, 2012 - Belatedly, the West is at least taking minimal note of some extraordinary developments in the pattern of Palestinian resistance to Israel’s long occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. In recent years there has occurred a dramatic and notable shift in Palestinian resistance to tactics of nonviolence that is ignored by Western media. Although as yet there has not been a principled or total abandonment of armed struggle by the Palestinians, and there have been sporadic Palestinian reliance on violence, especially in the aftermath of Israeli provocations taking the form of targeted killings in Gaza or night arrests in the West Bank, there is a definite turn toward nonviolence both by Palestinians living under occupation and in the outlook of the Global Palestinian Solidarity Campaign...

Why Does the Occupation Continue?
Review of Shir Hever’s The Political Economy of Israel’s Occupation
(Max Ajl) - 13-may-2012

May 12, 2012 - There is a latter-day tendency to see the 44-year Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories as the organic outward growth of the Zionist idea -- as though the aspiration to hold the entirety of the land, embedded in Labor Zionist doctrine, was in fact a certainty, simply waiting for time to catch up. With the occupation deepened since the 1993 Oslo accord, and the remainder of the Palestinian populace crowded into a scattering of bantustans in the West Bank and one big one in Gaza, one can understand the diffusion of this way of thinking. It appears that the Zionist drive to dominion has neared completion. Debate about the beginnings of the Israeli state is reasonably settled in historiography if not yet in the broader public realm. The general trajectory of Israeli history, its grounding in exclusionary settler-colonialism, quite unlike the inclusionary, plantation-style variety in South Africa, emerged from trends set in motion and likely crystallized by the early twentieth century....

Fuel Crisis Leaves Gaza’s Fishermen Grounded (Palestine News Network) - 13-may-2012

May 12, 2012 - Abd al Moti stares vaguely from the deck of his fishing trawler moored in Gaza Harbour, just at the peak of the fishing season, as the fuel crisis has all but grounded the entire Palestinian fishing fleet."It's the first time in the 20 years that I've owned this trawler that you can find me on the dock," Abd al Moti says. "I should be out at sea with my men. Missing the fishing season is a disaster." The employer of 10 fishermen and captain of the boat, Abd al Moti has seen his income decline this season in what he describes as the worst fishing year he has ever experienced. Just like him, dozens of other fishermen are killing time at the harbour waiting for some good news, but fuel remains so scarce that they can't afford to switch on their engines...

What If Kobe Bryant Were an Imprisoned Palestinian Soccer Player? (Dave Zirin) - 13-may-2012

May 12, 2012 - Imagine if a member of Team USA Basketball—let’s say Kobe Bryant—had been traveling to an international tournament only to be seized by a foreign government and held in prison for three years without trial or even hearing the charges for which he was imprisoned. Imagine if Kobe was allowed no visitation from family or friends. Imagine if he was left no recourse but to effectively end any future prospects as a player by terminating his own physical health by going on a hunger strike. Chances are we’d notice, yes? Chances are the story would lead SportsCenter and make newspaper covers across the world. Chances are all the powerful international sports organizations—the IOC, FIFA—would treat the jailing nation as a pariah until Kobe was free. And chances are that even Laker-haters would wear buttons that read, "Free Kobe." This is what has happened to Palestinian national soccer team member Mahmoud Sarsak...
