Settlers Uproot Trees, Assault Farmer in Beit Ummar (Palestine News Network) - 20-jul-2012
July 19, 2012 - On Thursday, 19th July, media spokesperson of the Popular Committee Against Settlement in Beit Ummar, Mohammad Ayyad, said that group of settlers from Beit Ein nearby settlement attacked and uprooted 15 trees in an agricultural land near the settlement in Wadi Abu al-Reesh area. The land belonged to Hammad Abdul Hamed al-Sleibi, 77, who lost more than 200 trees during six attacks carried out by settlers since last summer...

For Obama's Lethal Presidency, New Suit Aims at Justice (By Tom Junod) - 20-jul-2012
July 19, 2012 - It was a pre-emptive strike against a pre-emptive strike. When Nasser al-Awlaki found out in early 2010 that his American-born son Anwar was on American kill list, he responded in a very American way: He sued. "I used every legal means possible to stop the killing of my son," he said in an interview this past spring. Snd so — despite the notoriety of Anwar al-Awlaki and the success of Anwar al-Awlaki in inspiring terrorist attacks against the United States — he contacted the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Constitutional Rights, and they eventually filed a suit that attempted to enjoin the Obama Administration from carrying out its plans to kill him before he could carry out his alleged plans to kill Americans....

Libyan Elections: Burying the Amnesty Report (by Media Lens) - 20-jul-2012
July 19, 2012 - In January 2005, we described how the British media were united in celebrating Iraq’s 'first free election in decades’...In selling Libya’s elections as free and fair, the media have had little to say about a report by Amnesty International published as Libyans were preparing to vote, "Libya: Rule of law or rule of militias?" (July 2012), based on the findings of an Amnesty visit to Libya in May and June 2012. Amnesty reported "the mounting toll of victims of an increasingly lawless Libya, where the transitional authorities have been unable or unwilling to rein in the hundreds of militias formed during and after the 2011 conflict". The militias are now "threatening the very future of Libya and casting a shadow over landmark national elections… They are killing people, making arbitrary arrests, torturing detainees and forcibly displacing and terrorizing entire communities"...

Fifty Years of US Targeted ‘Kill Lists’: From the Phoenix Program to Predator Drones Assassination Nation (by DOUG NOBLE) - 20-jul-2012
July 19, 2012 - ...In fact, US assassination and targeted killing, with presidential approval, has been going on covertly for at least half a century. Ironically, all this drone killing now offers us a new opportunity: to pry open the Pandora’s box hiding long-held secrets of covert US assassination and targeted killing, and to expose them to the light of day. What we would find is that the only things new in the latest, more publicized revelations about kill lists and assassinations are the use of drones, the president’s hands-on approach in vetting targets, and the global scope of the drone killing...

Palestinian hunger striking prisoners still set on freedom or death (Palestine Monitor) - 20-jul-2012
July 19, 2012 - Akram Rikhawi, the 39 year old father of eight from Gaza has entered his 98th day on hunger strike, becoming the longest prisoner to go without food after Mahmoud Sarsak’s 92 day hunger strike. Rikhawi suffers from multiple ailments that have exacerbated his weak state of health, such as diabetes and asthma. Sentenced to nine years, he has been held in the Ramle prison hospital since his arrest in June 2004, and began hunger striking for his early release in protest of the medical negligence from the Israeli prison service that have contributed to immune deficiency and kidney problems...

July 19, 2012 - Syrian rebels took control of two major crossings on the border with Turkey and the main Abu Kamal post on the border with Iraq on Thursday, the first time opponents of President Bashar al-Assad have seized posts on the country's frontiers. Families of US Citizens Killed in Drone Attacks in Yemen Take Obama Officials to Court (Andy Worthington) - 20-jul-2012
July 19, 2012 - Yesterday, in New York, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit (PDF) accusing US defense secretary Leon Panetta, CIA director David Petraeus, and William McRaven and Joseph Votel, the commanders of Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), of violating the Constitution and international law when they authorized and directed drone strikes that resulted in the deaths of three US citizens in Yemen last year — Anwar al-Aulaqi (aka al-Awlaki) and Samir Khan in a strike on September 30, 2011, which I wrote about here, and al-Aulaqi’s 16-year old son, Abdulrahman al-Aulaqi, in another strike on October 14, 2011, at an open-air restaurant (a strike that killed at least seven people, including another child, Abdulrahman’s 17-year old cousin). The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Nasser Al-Aulaqi, the father and grandfather of Anwar and Abdulrahman Al-Aulaqi, and Sarah Khan, the mother of Samir Khan...

Will AP correct damaging false report about "forced conversions" of Christians in Gaza? (Ali Abunimah) - 20-jul-2012
July 19, 2012 - Two days ago the Associated Press published a story that seemed tailor made to go viral, especially on Islamophobic websites and other media only too eager to present Muslims in a negative light. It carries the headline: "Gaza Christians protest 'forcible conversions’": GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — Dozens of Gaza Christians staged a rare public protest Monday, claiming two congregants were forcibly converted to Islam and were being held against their will. The small but noisy demonstration showed the increasingly desperate situation facing the tiny minority....Except that the story is not true...

July 18, 2012 - The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) today filed a lawsuit charging that senior CIA and military officials violated the Constitution and international law when they authorized and directed drone strikes that resulted in the deaths of three U.S. citizens, including a 16-year-old boy, in Yemen last year. July 18, 2012 -- Three hundred Palestinians living in a village on the Israeli side of the separation wall have suffered a total blackout for ten days, after their sole remaining power source broke down. Dhaher al-Malih, to the west of Jenin in the northern West Bank, has been separated from neighboring West Bank villages by Israel’s separation wall. All residents must pass through an Israeli checkpoint to leave the village, and visitors require special permission from military authorities...

Obama’s Media Takeover Powers: The Infrastructure of a Police State (Glen Ford) - 19-jul-2012

July 18, 2012 - President Obama will be remembered as one of the chief architects of the American police state. His preventive detention law nullifies due process, leaving citizens naked to the whims of the executive. Now Obama has empowered himself to seize control of all the nation’s communications systems, under the guise of emergency preparedness. "The 'emergency’ he has in mind is a State of Emergency – martial law...

Arafat Came Offering Peace, Got Poison (By Dallas Darling) - 19-jul-2012
July 18, 2912 - If Yasser Arafat, former co-founder of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO), died from a lethal radioactive substance known as polonium, not only was it a clear case of political assassination by means of nuclear terrorism, but when he came bearing an olive branch and offered peace to Israel he only got poison. After many years of leading the struggle for Palestinian statehood, in 1974 PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat addressed the United Nations saying: "Today I come bearing an olive branch in one hand, and the freedom fighter's gun in the other. Do not let the olive branch fall from my hand. I repeat, do not let the olive branch fall from my hand."...

Shin Bet Goes on Palestinian Arrest Spree (Richard Silverstein) - 19-jul-2012
July 18, 2012 - The Shin Bet appears to have gone on a tear in arresting Israeli Palestinians over the past few weeks. There are now at least four who’ve been arrested, the last three under gag. I reported on the first arrest, of Dr. Eyad Jawhari of Majdal Shams earlier this month. He is still imprisoned at Kishon prison after being moved from there to Shikma and back again. Though he was arrested at the end of June, the security services have refused to allow him to consult either with his attorney or to speak with his family. He has been incommunicado for three weeks, standard operating procedure for the Israeli secret police. Though there was an initial gag concerning his arrest, shortly after I broke the story the Shin Bet partially removed the gag. Now they may report the detainee’s name, though there is no official word on the charges against him...

Olympiad Readiness: Militarized London Total Policing (by Stephen Lendman) - 19-jul-2012
July 18, 2012 - Olympism today differs vastly from its Athens roots. A previous article explained it's more about profiteering, exploitation, and cynicism than sport. Militarized London reflects something more. A 2011 "Total Policing" brochure explained. In September 2011, Bernard Hogan-Howe became Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service. Straightaway he announced a "total policing" policy. Effectively it means anything goes. He said it's "about total war on suspects and total victim care." Take the latter concern with a grain of salt...

Obama's Justice Department Rushes to the Rescue of LIBOR Criminals (Glen Ford) - 19-jul-2012
July 18, 2012 - The Justice Department has launched a flurry of phony investigations in the LIBOR scandal, with the ultimate aim of protecting the banks from the consequences of their crimes. That's the same role the Obama administration played in the "robo-signing" scandal: immunizing the criminals. In the LIBOR scheme, Attorney General Holder and his crew will try to shield the banksters "from legal action by a host of other government agencies and, ultimately, from the global universe of parties that have been harmed by the bankster’s schemes...

A Legal Challenge to Targeted Killings Assassination and the Constitution (by JOANNE MARINER) - 19-jul-2012
July 18, 2012 - Does the Executive Branch—including, specifically, the Pentagon and the CIA—possess unreviewable power under the US Constitution to carry out targeted killings of Americans overseas? A lawsuit filed this morning by the ACLU and the Center for Constitutional Rights poses the question, one that is hardly hypothetical. The plaintiffs in the case, Nasser al-Aulaqi and Sarah Khan, are close relatives of three American citizens who were killed in US drone strikes last year. The suit covers much of the same ground raised in a previous suit, Al-Aulaqi v. Obama, which was brought by Nasser al-Aulaqi in 2010. That prior case, which was dismissed on jurisdictional grounds, sought to prevent the killing of al-Aulaqi’s son, Anwar al-Aulaqi; the current case seeks damages for his death, as well as for the deaths of two other Americans...

The Unfortunate Truth Surrounding the Palestinian Hunger Strikes (by Matthew Vickery) - 19-jul-2012
July 18, 2012 - In May, 2000 plus Palestinian prisoners ended possibly the largest hunger strike in history. It was a strike with dual purpose: raising awareness and halting the practice of administrative detention — the jailing of Palestinians with no trial and for no given reason — as well as obtaining basic human rights for detained prisoners. Just last week, Palestinian footballer Mahmoud Sarsak, who spent 3 months on hunger strike, ended his hunger strike and was released from prison. Both strikes and others between have ended through deals which have resulted in some awareness of administrative detention, but no halt to it, and some, though limited concessions in regards to prisoner rights...

Crushed homes, violent killings: why the boycott Israel movement is pushing into the mainstream (by Anna Lekas Miller) - 19-jul-2012
July 18, 2012 - On March 16, 2003, American human rights activist Rachel Corrie was violently killed by a Caterpillar bulldozer in a refugee camp in Gaza. In an act of civil disobedience, Corrie was standing in the way of a bulldozer, trying to stop it from demolishing a Palestinian home. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier operating the bulldozer ignored her, running over her body while clearing the home that she gave her life trying to save. Corrie’s death spurred outrage and made Caterpillar a key target of Palestine solidarity activism. But it is only in the past few months that this activism finally began to have an impact on mainstream institutions invested in Caterpillar stock...

July 18, 2012. Chaos and violence continue, Joe Biden's National Security Adviser tries to make nice in Iraq, the political crisis continues, Josh Rogin continues his journalistic malpractice and misses the big story (as usual), while the US is in the midst of The Great Recession and unemployment remains at record highs the VA is handing out $10,000 and higher bonuses to senior executives, the VA's Allison Hickey continues struggling with how to answer a question (hint: respond to what was asked), and more... Nouri al-Maliki is not pleased with comments about him made by the former Syrian Ambassador to Iraq who defected last week and has decided to sue the diplomat. In no-surprise news, Al Mada reports that State of Law began insisting the ambassador needed to be arrested yesterday. He's also not pleased with Turkey....
